The January Garden | Seed Sorting and Starting

The garden in January is lack-luster to say the least. Brown, crispy weeds, dilapidated borders, missing pieces of ground cover, and little to no green. Does that stop the gardener from dreaming of warmer days and greenery adorning each corner? No my friend, it does not.

When I first started my gardening journey, I had no idea that the season could extend beyond those warmer months. Planning, sketching, dreaming, and drawing were elusive concepts confined to misconceptions. I spotlight to my lack of experience and knowledge when it came to growing my own food or embellishing our property with beautiful things.

Dare I digress to speak how envious I often feel of those living in beautiful places such as England, rural Italy, or Spain where it seems “gardening” both of the food and flower types are ingrained from the starts of their life. Creating whimsical and well-established spaces to be enjoyed and cherish throughout all the stages of their life.

I’m proud to say that with the help of YouTube, books, and hands-on experience that my knowledge of such concepts extends far beyond what it used to.

So, here is where I find myself–it my little sunroom with my boxes of seeds planning what I am ready to sow indoors in preparation for the upcoming season.

At this point, I know I am going to be seed sowing my brassicas or cold hardy plants such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chives, and tatsoi. I will also be starting some winter lettuce mixes known for their hardiness to frost and freeze.

I can just feel the crispy crunch of fresh vegetables, tended to by my hands with a fresh vinaigrette piling atop my plate.

Oh spring, how I yearn for you.
